Accumulating Snapshots Or Transactional (Fact Tables) - Advice
When modelling a workflow, like an assembly line, where the steps are rigid and haven't changed it years it's logical to use an Accumulating Snapshots fact table to record the flow.
However, if you're modelling a workflow that isn't as rigid, prone to change regularly, then is it still OK to use an Accumulating Snapshots fact table or a Transactional Fact Table with a Workflow Dimension table?
Here's an example of what I'm taking about?
factTable
------------------
FactTable_Key
BlahDimension_Key
Workflow_Key
WorkflowEventTime
dimWorkflow
-----------------
Workflow_Key
Workflow_Desc
Date_Key
CreatedTime
UpdatedTime
DeletedTime
dimDate
--------
DateKey
...
This way any changes to the worflow doesn't require a schema change.
Just add a row to the dimWorkflow for new workflow or set as deleted any not used anymore.
Does anyone forsee issues with this approach?
