How can I use jekyll liquid to check the file format? I would like to loop through some files and only pick out the files that are .html or .md

This is a really open-ended question. Maybe point to a repository and say specifically what you want to accomplish there, or dig a little deeper into the Liquid docs and the Jekyll doc pages on Liquid and Variables for some examples that might point you in the right direction.
