Python readlines() gives different length when I use different encoding

.everyoneloves__top-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__mid-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__bot-mid-leaderboard:empty{ height:90px;width:728px;box-sizing:border-box;
}

For the same test.txt file, I tried different methods to read it but got different result.
All three of the following gave me the result I want, for example, 1000.

with open('test.txt','r') as f:
print(len(f.readlines()))

and

with open('test.txt','r',encoding='utf-8') as f:
print(len(f.readlines()))

and

with codecs.open('test.txt','r') as f:
print(len(f.readlines()))

I ran wc -l test.txt in the terminal and it also gave 1000.

But the following gave a different result, such as 1007.

with codecs.open('test.txt','r',encoding='utf-8') as f:
print(len(f.readlines()))

Does that mean codecs handles encoding differently from io? Anyone knows the possible cause it? Thanks in advance.

  • Without seeing the content of test.txt it's anyone's guess; does this behavior happen on all files you try?

  • Have you compared the outputs of f.readlines() to see what's in the "extra" lines?
