Fullscreen parent element on click inside cross-domain iframe

I have a website that curates videos. These videos are contained inside an iframe with a cross-domain URL. The user primarily interacts with the video which is loaded with some custom controls as designed by a third-party contractor.

Given that I have limited access to this cross-domain server, I have added some Javascript code to listen for clicks on the fullscreen button. At this point, my job is to fullscreen a parent element rather than the video element inside the iframe.

Specifically our page looks something like:

<div class="iframe-root">
<video-chat/> <!-- Component with lots of children -->
<iframe frameborder="0">
</div>

My goal is to fullscreen the <div class="iframe-root"> element so that the <video-chat/> component is also shown in fullscreen mode.

So far, I have tried listening to clicks on the fullscreen button and posting a message to the window.parent via window.parent.postMessage({action: "fullscreen"}, '*'). However, this approach was unsuccessful as the browser blocks the parent's fullscreen request with the message:
Failed to execute 'requestFullScreen' on 'Element': API can only be initiated by a user gesture

Is it possible to fullscreen an element in the parent document on a click occurring in a cross-domain iframe? If so, how can I achieve this?
