Tomcat, classloaders and plugins

0

I'd like to add a plugin system to my Tomcat webapp. To experiment I've added a small Plugin interface to the webapp and I've implemented it in MyPlugin which is not a part of the deployed war. The webapp reads a config file and uses reflection to initialize the plugins.

Everything works as expected if I copy the jar containing MyPlugin into webapps/mywebapp/WEB-INF/lib. However, if I do this then the plugin is overwritten on the next deploy.

I tried moving the jar into a separate directory outside of the unpacked war and then pointing shared.loader in conf/catalina.properties there, but now I get an exception that MyPlugin cannot be cast to Plugin. Apparently the interface and the class are loaded using different classloaders.

What's the best way to solve this problem?
