Having issues getting the latest Python gnupg to create a key

For some background I am running this on A debian linux (kali)
I am running python-gnupg vs 2.3.1
The version of gpg I have is: gpg (GnuPG) 2.2.10
import gnupg
gpg = gnupg.GPG(homedir='doctests')
input_data = gpg.gen_key_input(key_type="RSA", key_length=1024,name_email="tom@fake.net")
key = gpg.gen_key(input_data)
I receive: the following error:
Exception in thread Thread-2:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/Users/thomasz/anaconda3/lib/python3.6/threading.py", line 916, in _bootstrap_inner
self.run()
File "/Users/thomasbekman/anaconda3/lib/python3.6/threading.py", line 864, in run
self._target(*self._args, **self._kwargs)
File "/Users/thomasz/anaconda3/lib/python3.6/site-packages/gnupg/_meta.py", line 650, in _read_response
result._handle_status(keyword, value)
File "/Users/thomasz/anaconda3/lib/python3.6/site-packages/gnupg/_parsers.py", line 995, in _handle_status
raise ValueError("Unknown status message: %r" % key)
ValueError: Unknown status message: 'ERROR'
Any thoughts on how I can fix this?
For some reason running this version of gnupg: '0.4.1.dev0' fixes it. But I'd like to use the most recent iteration if possible.
